### Selection expand\_more

Students must demonstrate or provide the following in their application:

- Proposed academic plan (sensibility for place/time, meaningfulness to the applicant, impact on/benefit to the applicant)
- Academic excellence and preparation (prerequisite knowledge, skills; recognized intellect and academic excellence)
- Recommendation letter (evidence of applicant’s capability, character)

This is a very competitive application process. Typically, 5-10% of applications are successful.

Successful applicants will propose an academic program that’s a logical extension of their undergraduate studies, and heavily research the details of the academic program and include the most exciting/relevant aspects in the application essay(s). Don't wait to apply to the academic program - see the application instructions for further guidance.

Applications are first read by a faculty selection committee. Approximately 20 finalists are invited to interview with the committee in February or March. Awards are made shortly thereafter.

### Application Procedure expand\_more

Apply via the [Harvard University Funding Portal](https://harvard.communityforce.com/Funds/Search.aspx). Harvard College seniors should log in with HarvardKey. Eligible Harvard College graduates without HarvardKey must create a non-HU log in. Once logged in, filter the “Institution” field for “Harvard College (students only).”

Prepare in advance the following materials, all due by our deadline:

- **Resume:** Indicate significant activities, achievements, and experiences in college that demonstrate your values and trajectory. Do not exceed one page.
- **Unofficial transcript:** Download your unofficial transcript from my.harvard.edu, it should include your spring course grades and fall course registration.
- **Statement:** Describe your planned study and your preparation to pursue this course of study. Discuss how these plans relate to your career and personal goals. Your essay should also address the special suitability of your proposed institution for these plans. Do not exceed 1,000 words.
- **UK program admissions application confirmation:** Your full admissions application, including recommendation letters, must be submitted to the proposed UK academic program before submitting this funding application. Screenshot your UK university admissions application portal for proof that you submitted your application, and the letters have been received. The screenshot should show the name of the graduate program to which you applied, and that program should match your Harvard-UK study plan.
- **Two letters of recommendation:** Letters should comment on the suitability of your proposed study plan, your preparedness to undertake this graduate course of study (with evidence), and relevant attributes and accomplishments that speak to your potential success in the proposed graduate study. The letters should comment on the relevance and appropriateness of the proposed study plan to your academic and intellectual goals. At least one letter should be from an instructor in your current or proposed field. *Solicit these via the Harvard University Funding Portal.*

If you or your recommenders have questions about this application or the online submission process, please [email the Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships](mailto:fellowships@fas.harvard.edu).
