#   St. Andrew's Society Scholarship

The [St. Andrew’s Society](http://www.standrewsny.org/Scholarship) initiated this Scholarship in 1956, at its 200th anniversary. The Scholarship supports two Scottish-American students from prestigious US schools to study in Scotland for one year. Candidates must be endorsed by their undergraduate institution.

- Approximately $35,000 to be used for tuition, board, transportation, and other expenses. Please note: this award is unlikely to fully cover all study- and travel-related expenses.

The selection committee endorses one applicant in November. Endorsees then apply directly to St. Andrew’s Society of New York. Six finalists attend an interview and luncheon in New York City. Two scholarships are awarded shortly thereafter.

To be considered for nomination, applicants should upload the following materials to the application site by our deadline. Follow the link below to access the application.

- **Resume:** Indicate significant activities, achievements, and experiences in college that demonstrate your values and interest. Include your extracurricular interests and hobbies.Do not exceed one page.
- **Unofficial transcript:** Download your unofficial transcript from my.harvard.edu, it should include your fall course grades and spring course registration.
- **Short-answer essays (2):** Answer these two prompts in one document with essay number and prompt before each response.
    - Why do you wish to continue your education past the current year? (200 words max)
    - Why do you wish to study in Scotland and how will this study contribute to your overall goals? (200 words max)
- **Scholarship application form:** Complete the [application form](https://hu.sharepoint.com/:b:/r/sites/FAS-URAF-Harvard-Key-Protected-Resources/HarvardKey%20Protected%20Resources/app_form_St.%20Andrews.pdf?csf=1&web=1&e=REMmkJ) electronically. Handwritten forms will not be accepted. Entering your name in the signature box will constitute your signature. (You can ignore the application checklist on the last page at this stage.)
- **Two letters of recommendation:** Letters should comment on the suitability of your proposed study plan, your preparedness to undertake this graduate course of study (with evidence), and relevant attributes and accomplishments that speak to your potential success in the proposed graduate study. The letters should comment on the relevance and appropriateness of the proposed study plan to your academic and intellectual goals. At least one letter should be from an instructor in your current or proposed field. Both letters should be addressed to The St. Andrews Society Scholarship Selection Committee. **Letters are due at the same time as all other application components.**
- Be sure to propose an academic program that’s a logical extension of your undergraduate studies and heavily research the details, including the most exciting/relevant aspects of that program. Include this information in your application essay(s)
